“It’s perfectly imperfect to me and a personal win. For 9 of the last 10 years I was an Army photographer, and got comfy shooting your standard newsy-type shot, so it’s been a personal struggle to step out of that box. Each session I keep pushing myself to focus on little details, throw the rule book out the window, find more emotion, and I feel like I did that here. For me, this photo embodies my childhood summers-barefoot, chowing down on watermelon, not a care in the world. ”
