How to change clothing color in Photoshop

Learning how to change the color of your clothing, backdrops, blankets, etc. by hand in Photoshop gives you complete control over the outcome of your image and gives you ample opportunity to add variety to your portfolio and marketing promotions. I personally use this technique quite often, and want to show you how you can use it also.

Some reasons you might want to change the color in Photoshop may be:

1. You may be just beginning your photography journey and are looking to add different images to your portfolio, but you can’t quite afford an array of gorgeous clothing for your maternity clients just yet. This can be a great way to have multiple color dresses, but you are utilizing the same dress in the meantime. This also applies to other things as well such as backdrops, props, and more.

2. You may want to promote different sessions to your clients but you may not have time to schedule a shoot beforehand to use in your photoshoot promotions. For example, let’s say you wanted to promote fall mini sessions but you have a gorgeous session from the past Summer you want to use. In that case you can change the color of her dress to a more fall color, and change your scenery using the Creating Seasons fall color changing actions.

3. This technique can also be useful to fix color casts that may fall onto your client’s clothing and/or skin. If they are propped up against a gorgeous red wall, for example, that red may also be cast in places you do not want them. Knowing how to change those colors in Photoshop can help you blend those colors and bring your photos to perfection.
